Stockton’s brand new shopping and leisure experience has launched, with the revamped Stockton Tesco Extra store now featuring a Funky Monkeys Soft Play Café and an Xercise4Less gym.

The brand new store, located on Durham Road, marks a new type of retail destination following its extensive revamp. Celebrations included staff and customers alike, such as Val Jones, Checkout Operator, Jeanette Castellow, Pharmacy Assistant and Keith Wallace, Backdoor Assistant who have each worked at Stockton Tesco Extra for 40 years.

Customers at the store were also handed a free gym bag filled with goodies, complete with a picture design from local schoolgirl Aaliyah Pruden. To engage with local schools before the official re-launch, the store ran a competition asking pupils to design a healthy eating poster. Ten year old Aaliyah from Hardwick Green Primary School was selected as the winner and her colourful poster was on the 250 bags given away in store. Aaliyah won her school a junior chef academy workshop and £50 gift card for herself.

Judith Simpson CEO, Sarah Kirkman and Kirsty Barnfather from Daisy Chain joined Aaliyah as the guests of honour and cut a ribbon alongside Tesco store manager Darryl Collier, Xercise4less managing director Jon Wright and Funky Monkeys director Henry Moore, declaring all new services and departments now open and the revamp complete!

Store Manager Darryl added: “The celebrations have been a great way to thank our shoppers for their support over the past few weeks and their positive feedback today has been brilliant. We would like to thank Judith, Sarah and Kirsty for coming along today and joining in the celebrations with us.”

Judith from Daisy Chain, a local charity awarded a £500 donation said: “We’re thrilled that this very large and well-known Tesco Extra store should invite a local cause to play a part in its re-launch. This £500 donation will enable us to support more children, parents, carers and siblings who are impacted by autism.”

The Tesco store is now open from 00:01am Monday to midnight Saturday and 10am to 4pm Sunday. Funky Monkeys is open 10am to 6pm Monday to Sunday.
